When most of society thinks of “Christianity”, they associate it with being “religious”. I know a lot of people who aren’t believers, but they do charitable things that support the wellbeing of others; specifically those less fortunate. James 1:27 identifies religion as remembering the fatherless and the widower while keeping yourself unspotted from the world. There is no mention of acting “holier than thou” or doing a certain set of practices. Being religious means that you love GOD with all of your heart, soul, and mind. It also consists of loving others as you love yourself; loving others with the love of CHRIST JESUS (Mark 12:30-31). Some of the stereotypes that surround Christians are thinking that you’re perfect and do no wrong, looking down on those who aren’t “saved”, you’re boring because you don’t know how to have “fun”, and the most infamous is that you “hate” people for their opposing lifestyles. These and so many other false perceptions of Christianity are all wrapped up in the thought of “religion”. When you ask someone about religion they will rattle off a list of faiths that are mainly practiced by people such as Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Mormonism, etc.
Being a Christian isn’t about us acting superior like we’re GOD’S “Arian Race”. We are an imperfect people who believe in the reality of a Perfect GOD. We were drawn by His Spirit. We have our own personal testimonies of how He has made Himself known to us. We know for ourselves that He is Who He says He is! We have Faith in Him and His Word. We believe. As Christians we know that JESUS is the Son of GOD Who was sent to save all of humanity from their sins; ensuring eternal life for all of those who believe (John 3:16). Upon accepting this Truth as your reality, you will live your life for JESUS, and it’s all outlined in the Word of GOD. This is just the start of becoming a Christian.
Personally, The LORD has broken me. He has led me through trying times only to make me a stronger woman of Faith! I can’t take back my time with GOD in prayer, reading His Word, and etc. These moments were me on the Potter’s wheel being molded into a better version of myself; the woman I was destined to be according to GOD’S Will for me. Everyone has to come to the Truth on their own; working out their own salvation. If someone chooses to not believe then Christians aren’t called to hate them. We pray! We love. We leave it at that! We are called to speak The Gospel, but if someone doesn’t want to hear it then we are told by JESUS to keep it moving (Matthew 10:14).
I hope that this post reveals a glimpse of the Truth on what Christianity is really about. It’s not religion, it’s a relationship. And it’s definitely not about a group of people acting better than the rest of society. We can see that this present life is temporary and that there is more. We weren’t born to live it up then die. Partying, drinking, sleeping around, and buying whatever your heart desires are trivial actions that fade with time. Everyone wants to know what their purpose is, who they are, and why they are alive (especially right now). Christians know that the answer to all of these questions are wrapped up in the reality of JESUS (John 14:6)!
This is what matters to GOD the most. This is what makes us like JESUS. This is “true religion”!
James 1:27 King James Version (KJV)
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world
