Today’s post is “for fashionistas” as we learn the true meaning behind a few of the iconic fashion terms that dominate the industry. This will hopefully provide some with clarity the next time they’re hobnobbing it up at a fashion show or event. This guide will give you an advantage and edge; helping you to stay in-the-know. So whether you’re a fashion insider who works in the business, a designer, model, or avid lover; let’s review the chicest fashion words that every fashionista must know!
CAPSULE COLLECTION
This is my favorite fashion term! It’s simply chic as it means a collection that contains a few timeless pieces that essentially work with just about anything! In my “capsule collection” I would have a black blazer, wide leg pants with pockets, a low-cut tank blouse, something with polka dots (either dress, top, pants, jacket), and some type of heel (either wedge or stiletto)! This term is widely known as being a marketing gimmick in the fashion industry and I think it’s a great way for a new designer to launch their brand.
STREET STYLE
Streetwear is basic clothing designed to target a specific demographic such as skaters (i.e. Hollister, PacSun). But, “Street Style” refers to witnessing a stylish pedestrian owning the sidewalk as their personal runway! Street Style is another favorite of mine as a fashionista because this enables any and everyone to show off their style in a public way that isn’t pretentious. You are being you and sometimes it pays off with a photographer snapping a shot of your style to share with the world. Street Style is fashion inspiration at its finest as images of chic pedestrians are shared across the world; giving fashion motivation to those who come across them.
COUTURE
Short for “Haute Couture” and French for “High Fashion”. This is the “crème de la crème” of fashion! Not just anyone can be identified as a couture label/designer. There are a set a rules that you must align with in order to be officially recognized as such. This is fashion that is constructed by hand from start to finish. These pieces are constructed for a designer’s exclusive clientele. Haute Couture designers construct exclusive trend-setting styles that define the fashion forecast for the upcoming season. But let it be known, that France holds the true key in determining whether a designer can be recognized as Haute Couture as outlined in their law entitled “chambre syndicale de la haute couture”.

READY-TO-WEAR
“Urban and Stylish” defines this famous fashion term as “factory-made clothing you buy in your average shopping mall(...)” These styles mimic those seen on the runways during Fashion Week and come in sizes suitable for all. Basically it’s what you and I own in our closets, but that doesn’t make it (or us) unworthy. There are some items that I own that I hope will last for a long time; mixing and matching them with new purchases.
LABEL
Cambridge Dictionary defines “Label” as a company that produces goods for sale, the goods themselves, or the company’s name or symbol. Thus, when you come across this in the fashion world it simply means the name of the designer who is the maker of the garment/product.
RESORT WEAR
This term is easy to remember as it literally means what you would wear at a resort. In essence, this is high-fashion for jet setters! So the next time you plan a getaway trip to an exclusive five star resort or book a luxury cruise; be sure to bring your A-game when packing your bag. The everyday basics that fill up your closet and drawers simply won’t do. This also means that modeling “Resort Wear” anywhere but at a resort, on a cruise, or on “holiday” is a fashion faux-pas!
