#Hashtags

“It turned out that lots of people wanted to have their voices heard and participate in a global conversation(...) I created this idea for the Internet and I wanted anybody who could write text on the Internet to be able to participate in global conversations.” -Chris Messina: product designer, internet consultant, inventor of #hashtags

Gone are the days when social media was solely about being #social. We have reached the apex of internet innovation when it comes to the utilization of social media. I remember when Facebook was launched and how people joined to reconnect with old high school friends; or parents wanting to keep tabs on their kids once they went off to college. A decade later; social media has become the king of marketing and branding to reach a targeted audience. Being an influencer is now a full-time career with lucrative incentives. While the #hashtag is no longer associated in the human psyche as the ‘pound sign’. Something that was created to join people together has done just that and more. With everything, there is the bitter that you must take with the sweet. Social Media has enable me to connect with people in different countries; sharing common interests and supporting each other’s efforts!

I have grown my overall reach to that of an est.600 (combining all of my social media platforms) within a year in a half of launching my blog; promoting it on social media! I have heard nonstop (from bloggers and influencers with mass followings) that staying the path and continuing to post constantly leads to inevitable organic growth. This is where #hashtags take the spotlight!

With the invention and utilization of #hashtags; it has enable online communities to be formed. This formula makes it easier for brands to target their intended audience in an effort to attract them to their product. With every post I share on social media; I add relevant #hashtags that will register on the feeds of those that I believe will be of interest in what I’m promoting. This has paid off immensely as I stated early. When I launched my blog, I had 70 followers on #instagram. Now I have an est. of 230. I still have work to do. I’m not trying to get some outrageous amount of followers to feel important. I want organic growth so that I know that my followers are actually wanting what I’m offering. This confirms to me that AESTHETIC: The Art of Me is providing relevant content that motivates and inspires your #millenniallifestyle!

#Hashtags make it easy for everyone to find content that piques their interest; sharing concepts and ideas that take our #aesthetic to the next level. This iconic mode of communication on the internet has also been used to give a voice to overcomers, survivors, and victims; providing information and support. #Hashtags have given everyone with access to the internet a microphone; making their voices heard (virtually around the world)! I attribute #hashtags to the growth of AESTHETIC and how I’m able to market my brand to a large pool of people without passing out flyers, business cards, or even advertising.

When it comes to using the right #hashtags, you have to narrow it down to the most popular ones that are relevant to your post. As a blogger, for example, I always use:

(...) to promote a blog post that I’m sharing on #instagram. These tags have been used millions of times; making my post(s) more accessible to people that frequent these tags (looking for trending content). If I’m promoting a YouTube video then I will use #NewVideo (on #twitter) or #newvideo, #youtubersofinstagram, #myyoutubechannel (on #instagram) to get it in front of as many eyes as possible.

Sometimes, all these #hashtags can feel #overwhelming! It’s necessary to maintain a healthy balance when it comes to posting, promoting, and publishing on social media. I like to NOT post one or two times a week; letting my content surface for a bit. I never go more than two days without posting.

I have noticed my following drop after two days (when I went on a short hiatus while performing last Fall). I make sure to post #something (a selfie, a personal quote, a blog post, promo graphic, etc.) in an effort to keep my brand surfacing on my followers’ (and potential followers’) feeds.

Overall, #hashtags enable your voice to be heard by everyone everywhere! You can use your #hashtags for good; spreading motivation and inspiration to someone who needs it. #Hashtags also enable eager #entrepreneurs to hit the ground running; launching their dream(s) on their social media platforms to reach their targeted audience. Chris Messina’s vision for the internet has become a reality; making others’ visions a reality as well!
