Poetic Flow

Poetry is an art form that expresses the state of one’s soul through words. I’m a HUGE Spoken Word supporter and fan! I don’t necessarily see myself diving deep into it. Yet, when it comes to looking for something to do, a Spoken Word event is what I search for first. Poetry can be written and left for the reader to interpret or it can be performed through the form of Spoken Word. I admire the rhythm and flow that is expressed through the poet as he or she shares their masterpiece.

Poetry feels like you’re sharing a secret for the first time. It’s intimate, raw, and authentic. I believe that when the words are pouring from your heart that the poem can’t be judged or critiqued. I used to write poems here and there whenever one came to me. Now I have been keeping a notebook filled with poems to one day publish as a book to share with others my work, my thoughts, my heart, and ultimately my #aesthetic.

Writing in general can be cathartic; enabling you to release those emotions that get bottled up within your heart. Sometimes you don’t feel like talking, but you still need to let it all out. It’s always interesting to look back at what you have written in the heat of the moment to see how you have grown since then. You then realize that those moments never last long. It’s just a moment.

One of my favorites poets is Langston Hughes, the black renaissance hero of the twentieth century! About a year ago, I read a book of his poetry and I was delighted by the southern cadence of his words that painted the picture of the culture he grew up in and was living in at the time of his writings.

Poetry isn’t just a great way to release tension from a stressful moment, but it’s also great to express the joy that you are feeling or your expectations for the future. Poetry highlights every human emotion that can be felt and it’s powerful when you read or hear someone else’s work only to feel it resonate with your disposition.

Below are links to my 2 favorite poems to inspire and motivate you! Grab a latte, find a cozy spot with a notebook and pen (or iPad/laptop), and simply let the words flow from your heart to the page. These are your words and your emotions that need to be released in a healthy way that gives you relief. So let the words flow freely and write on!
