Cup of Love #coffeetrends

Updated: Jul 10, 2018

Coffee in the morning is my favorite staple when it comes to my daily routine. At night, I actually get excited as I look forward to making my "cup of joe" hours later! I use to have throbbing headaches when I waited too long to make a cup and it felt like coffee dictated my disposition for the day. I have gone months without drinking it and then...I MISS IT! The taste, the bold aroma, and that added sweetness of flavored creamer. I use to drink my coffee with extra cream, two sugars, but now I drink it with just cream to cut out some sugar. I've tried it the healthier way (i.e. black) and my palette couldn't handle the drab taste. I enjoy coffee because of the cream. This "liquid crack" as I like to call it gets me going for the day; putting that extra pep in my step. It's interesting to notice the difference in my countenance from going without coffee to having a cup or two. But enough about me! I did some research when it comes to the topic of coffee and I wanted to share some trends when it comes to techniques of the trade. Some may be familiar while others may be out of the ordinary, but all the more reason for you to give it a try to see if it works in your #aesthetic.

BULLETPROOF COFFEE:

Butter as a sugar/creamer substitute in your coffee? I came across this technique when I was searching for different ways that people fast. I don't know how this actually fits into the conversation when butter is one of the main things to avoid when it comes to fasting (i.e. a "Daniel Fast"). But I watched a few videos and a lot of people have embraced it as something that they do apart of their workout plan. This type of coffee is to help people burn fat giving them more energy. For all the praise that I have heard concerning it, I have also heard just as many complaints and concerns. Theeverygirl.com shares that making this kind of coffee takes more than stirring contents with a spoon and demands brewing as well as blending with a blender. And the butter can't be just any old brand of butter, but "grass-fed" butter. Another added ingredient to this concoction is "Brain Octane" which is a form of MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) a concentrated form of 100% coconut oil.

Blend all of this together with your brewed beans and it makes for a frothy caffeinated drink. BulletProof is also a company that provides their own products for you to make the perfect "bulletproof cup". Theeverygirl.com also breaks down the positive and negative sides of this trend exposing how the brand behind the fad boats of a plethora of benefits including "sharp focus, increased brain function, non-jittery energy, higher productivity, weight loss through ketosis, and lack of hunger." The site further reveals how adding butter and MCT oil "is extremely calorie dense and (obviously) high in fat(...) you’ll need to cut carbs almost completely from your diet to see those fat loss results."

COFFEE ON TAP:

Drinkcoffee.com describes that "this type of coffee is specifically referred to as “nitrogen infused coffee”. Coffee on tap is said to have a similar feel to beer; that rich, creamy, foamy taste." Also recognizing that this style of coffee doesn't demand the need of sugar or cream to satisfy any sweet tooth. This trend would be enjoyed best with a group during brunch so that the #cupoflove can be shared as drinkcoffee.com also warns that drinking this kind of coffee alone will cause lack of sleep. When the coffee is conveniently available at your disposal; it's easy to consume more than you usually would and regret it later! But this is a popular tactic for coffeehouses and I think a great method for groups that are dining together.

COLD BREW:

"(...)coffee grounds are steeped in water for up to 24 hours to produce a concentrated coffee essence, which is then diluted to taste and served chilled." is how telegraph.co.uk describes the process of "cold brewing". I haven't tried a cup yet, but after reading up on trend that is replacing iced coffee, I'm interested in tasting it for myself! I didn't realize that iced coffee is actually "espresso-based", but I've seen my orders made in front of me with the barista adding the syrup, milk, etc. Cold Brew enables the drinker to enjoy the full-bodied taste of the beans that have been brewed which is important because it's easy for everything to taste the same (especially after making your cup sweet to your taste). This type of coffee is known to be a greener option that doesn't demand electricity from machines. Another variant of this (that I referred to prior) is Nitro Coffee that is nitrogen added to Cold Brew. Telegraph.co.uk outlines that Nitro Coffee "(...)produces a cold, silky drink with a creamy head that is drunk black (it bears an uncanny resemblance to Guinness)."

Drip Coffee:

I'm not familiar with this process and to me it seems to take longer, but I have noticed that those who go this route enjoy the results and find it to be worth the wait. It all comes down to getting the most out of your coffee concerning taste. When you're using quality beans I can understand the need for going through the motions to obtain that top quality flavor. I use to use a French Press as that was the most convenient way for me to make coffee as a college student/single Actress in between work, but now I like using Instant Coffee. I simply boil a pot of water on the stove, then add it to the Instant Coffee stick that I poured into my cup, and stir the contents with my choice of creamer!

Berkeleywellness.com shares information on some of the benefits of drinking Instant Coffee; highlighting that "A small trial published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research in 2010 found that healthy people who drank instant coffee (extracted from both green and roasted beans) for five days had significant reductions in certain biomarkers of oxidative stress. This suggests that the coffee may offer some protection against chronic diseases linked with oxidation, such as heart disease."
