DIY-SKINCARE REVIEWS

So...seemingly overnight, a nasty pimple makes a cameo on your face. You search the internet to see if there’s anything that you can do to make it disappear; watching YouTubers show you how to apply random food products to your skin. You consider using items that you already have in your home in an effort to save money. I sometimes wonder how people came up with these homemade #aesthetics. I’ve put a few of them to the test and some of them have come up short in my experience. Below I have listed some popular skincare diys and why they’re a miss all for your consideration. I also share what has worked for me in hopes that it will elevate your #aesthetic!

Turmeric Mask

I watched a YouTuber do a tutorial on how to make this organic mask in an effort to lighten dark spots and to have glowing skin. She recommended doing it for 5 days then to once a week if desired. I followed the steps by mixing organic honey, turmeric powder, lemon juice, and plain yogurt. I admit that this concoction did give my skin a nice glow and slightly lightened the appearance of dark spots, but it wasn’t as advertised. When the YouTuber did the video, she barely had any blemishes to begin with. The thumbnail picture for the tutorial showed a face consumed with acne. I overall decided to not add this to my skincare #aesthetic because it’s #messy. The aftermath of using turmeric can leave a yellow stain. When applying it to your face you will get it seemingly everywhere (on you, all over the sink, and so on). It’s also hard to clean up. I have yellow stains that are stuck in a few pajama tops (and even on my glasses) So with that, you have been warned!

Milk

I’m not sure if this has worked for anyone else in lightening dark spots and I’m not even sure how someone came up with this idea! I’ve put it to the test several times with no successful results. Some suggest washing it off after leaving it on for several minutes. Then there is the school of thought that recommends leaving it on; allowing the milk to dry on your face. I suppose it depends on how dark your spot is, but either way I find it to be a waste of time. When it comes to implementing milk into my skincare routine; I like to drink it instead. This allows me to reap the most benefits from what it has to offer.

Toothpaste

Have you ever heard of putting toothpaste on a pimple; leaving it on overnight in order to minimize its size? I have attempted this several times in the hopes that it will actually work. I have had the occasional nasty zit pop up. I become so eager to get rid of it that I’m willing to try anything (or give something another shot)! People try to attach a products benefits to the reasoning behind why it will work for your skincare needs, but sometimes it isn’t enough to get the job done. I understand that anything worth doing takes time to see real results, but the toothpaste trick (like the turmeric and milk) are simply a waste of time and energy.

Green Tea Bag

I find this tactic to be similar to the turmeric mask in that it did work to a degree. My only problem with this is that it was very tedious. Again, I think that it depends on how severe your blemishes are. If they’re mild then the turmeric mask and the green tea bag may be enough for your skincare need(s). It’s recommended that you boil hot water and place the green tea bag in the water. After a few minutes, remove the bag and let it cool off. After that, take the bag and rub it on your dark spot(s). It’s not messy like the turmeric, but if you attempt to try this then don’t rub the bag too hard against your face. You will rip the bag and cause the tea to spill out if you do. Sometimes, you can get caught up in wanting to get rid of a blemish that you become aggressive. Don’t force it. Be gentle to your skin and especially your face when treating your skincare concerns.

WHAT WORKS

Apple Cider Vinegar

I use to make an ACV toner that is ACV diluted in water. It lightens dark spots naturally while also giving your skin a nice subtle glow. Be careful not to rub your skin to hard like I just mentioned. You don’t want to cause an abrasion on your face enabling the ACV to burn it; making your skincare matters worse. Lightly rub the mixture on your clean skin (with a cotton ball) before moisturizing your face at night for the best results.

Lavender Essential Oil

I suggest the same thing with applying lavender to your blemishes. Don’t get aggressive with trying to get the product deep into your skin in an effort to get rid of it. Lavender, in my experience, works best on lightening dark spots, but never worked in removing pimples or bumps. Some people mix it into their moisturizer and that’s how they choose to apply it to their skin. I took a couple of dabs and applied it directly to the dark spots on my face. I did it in the morning and at night after washing my face. Overall it worked the best out of anything natural that I tried; seeing results in a matter of days.
