Skincare 101

It’s a little alarming that there is so much information made available to women about how to care for their skin, but we rarely hear about or see how men can care for their own skin. With some digging, you are able to find articles and information that breakdown the basics of what men can do to have healthy younger looking skin. Through my research, I’m hoping to highlight some simple ways that you fellas can take action in managing your skin. I’m sure that some of you out there are accustomed to the simple routine of soap and water (and maybe lotion) to care for your skin, but the largest organ of your body deserves better! You don’t have to buy hundreds of dollars of products to get the job done in improving your skin care.

SKIN TYPE:

First, before you can use any product, you need to know the type of skin you have.

Oily Skin=shiny/greasy Dry Skin=flaky and rough causing irritation Normal=clear skin Combination=some areas of your skin are oily while others are dry

After understanding your skin type then you will be able to use products that are specifically for your condition. I can attest that using skincare products that are not suitable for your skin will do damage and be an unfortunate waste of money! This means that it is highly important that you pay attention to the products that you purchase; taking note of what the product’s purpose is.

FACIAL CLEANSER:

It’s time to ditch your bar of soap and to invest in a facial cleanser that is specifically for your skin type. Soap is only good for cleansing areas on your body where the skin is tougher such as your feet, underarms, and groin area. Soap strips the skin of important oils that it contains to keep your skin moisturized. Your face is more sensitive and deserves products that will help it look it’s best. Also, be sure to wash your face regularly and not just when you get up in the morning. Wash your face in the morning, after exercising, and at night to receive the overall benefits of the product you are using; transforming your skin. https://www.aad.org/public/skin-hair-nails/skin-care/skin-care-for-men

MOISTURIZER:

Invest in a moisturizer that will nourish your skin. Cleansing your skin isn’t enough when it comes to having a healthy face. According to Webmd.com, men with dry skin should choose a cream, which is the thickest formulation. While men with normal skin should use a lotion which is lighter and less oily. For men with oily skin, it is recommended that they choose a skin toner or gel. https://www.webmd.com/beauty/features/men-shaving-grooming

SHAVING:

When it comes to shaving, I’m sure you don’t need a woman to tell you how to do it right! Yet, I’m sure some of you don’t know that shaving in the shower is a great way to properly remove the hair from your face. Skinvision.com reveals that “Not only will this save you time, but the steam moistens your face and helps open pores. This makes hair follicles stand up better, which makes it easier to get a closer and smoother shave.” After shaving (in the steaming shower) then you can continue with your usual routine of moisturizing your skin through using an exfoliant and/or aftershave. https://www.skinvision.com/library/skin-care-tips-for-men

If you aren’t shaving and have a bread then consider using a bread oil to help keep yours soft and moisturized. I personally recommend using an essential oil to care for your bread. Visit this link for more information! https://www.youngliving.com/blog/essential-oils-for-beards/

SPF:

It’s vital that you use the proper SPF to help protect your skin while you’re out and about especially in the heat of the day (during those warmer spring/summer months or while on vacation)! It is recommended by dermatologists that you apply your sunscreen on all areas of your skin that will be exposed (including your ears and neck). I’m actually allergic to all types of SPF. It makes me breakout into hives! When I’m out in the heat during the warmer months of the year, I use an aloe vera gel that helps to sooth sun exposed skin. I suggest looking into something similar if you are like me. Check out this link from Tools of Men on “The Best Sunscreen for Men in 2019”. https://www.toolsofmen.com/best-mens-sunscreen/

Making these changes will benefit your skin from the inside out as well as your appearance in the long run; causing you to only look your best for years to come!
