Stress Signals

Sometimes, things can overwhelm us to such a degree that we don’t even realize it. Suddenly, it may seem like overnight your circumstances have escalated as issues pile on top of each other. There is such a thing as good stress such as planning exciting events or doing something exhilarating and spontaneous. Then there is the kind of stress that reaches a debilitating level; jeopardizing your overall health.

As #millennials (and specifically as #americans) there are a lot of issues within our country that contribute to the stress we may have in our daily lives. These issues include the latest mass shootings, children separated from their parents because of deportation, the conflicting opinions that surround the president of this country, lack of opportunities for minorities, racism, and so on.

Just listing those examples has got me feeling stress-vibes...

But maybe you’re like me; having these things on your mind (as well as the day-to-day demands of living life). You come to realize that you don’t particularly pay attention to the silent signals your body may be sending you as a warning to “simmer down”!

In a post from Psychology Today, it is revealed that “Chronic stress leads to physical changes in your brain and body, changes in the way you’re thinking, and ultimately to changes in the way you’re behaving.” The post (published by Erin Olivo Ph.D. in 2016) further states that “Stressed out people are more likely to engage in unhelpful and unhealthy behaviors like overeating, smoking, drinking, and dropping out of important activities like exercising and socializing.  And all of this can increase the likelihood that your stress turns into depression.”

Dailyburn.com shares in a post from 2014 that “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 90 percent of all illness and disease is stress-related.”

The following lists are my personal and unprofessional opinion based upon experience and observation. If you struggle with anxiety, fear, depression, or severe stress then I recommend that you consult a professional for guidance.

STRESS SIGNS:

overeating (particularly sweets as comfort food)

restlessness/lack of sleep

constant headaches

anxious: leading to panic/fear

constant chatter (you can’t stop talking about a situation; obsessing over it)

STRESS SOLUTIONS:

do something that you enjoy to help take your mind off of things (I like to play my guitar as it feels like a cathartic activity for me)

let it out (don’t hold your emotions in by allowing yourself to have the opportunity to let them out if that be crying/shouting/etc.)
